Round Lake (near Sandpoint)

Round Lake, June 24, 2012

In the morning, we decided to head out to a place called, not particularly imaginatively, Round Lake. As we were leaving the hotel at Sandpoint, we detected rain drops. So we went to the nearest Safeway, picked up some salads for lunch, and went back to the hotel. Then the indoor swimming pool summoned us, so I lounged about and Stephen did a few laps.

After lunch, the weather looked better, so we finally did the Round Lake trek. The trail that we walked on was called the Stewardship Trail – it featured several interpretive signs about clear-cutting forests and the regeneration thereof. It really was hard to imagine that 60-70 years ago, the forest was replanted after being clearcut. As you can see from the Google Earth shot of our trail below, we walked through a LOT of forest.

Based on this map, our plan was to do the outer red trail, connecting with the blue trail on the right to complete a circuit of the lake. But at the entrance, we were advised that the eastern trails were pretty well under water. So we revised our plan somewhat.

And this is the Google Earth shot of our track.

Here is a shot of Round Lake.

This is the pond at the western end of our hike.

And finally, a bunch of flowers. Not sure of their names, but I’ll guess tiger lilies, water lilies, daisies, and trilliums.

And now for some more rest and relaxation.
